NEW YORK -- Russell Banks seems happy. For many novelists that wouldn't be such a significant statement, but for Banks, whose novels dig deep into the soul of the American underclasses -- where wife-beating and child abuse and murder and self-loathing are bred in the bone -- even the appearance of satisfaction is newsworthy.
