There you have it - half a century in the House of Commons, years as a Cabinet Minister and, keen-witted and clear-eyed, the most decisive Secretary of State for Industry and Energy we ever had, and a politician who never ducked a moral issue, or put party loyalty and his own interests above almost classical abstractions of virtue, gravity and intellectual honesty, is dismissed by the young supporters of New Labour as "that lunatic".
