Shortly after midnight on August 17, 1992, I was awakened from a deep sleep by a brilliant flash of lightning, a deafening crack of thunder, and three startled dogs and two trembling cats seeking refuge on the bed.
Each subsequent clap shook the house more like a southern California earthquake than the thunderstorms we usually experience. Not just one or two "window rattlers" struck that night but instead more than an hour of nonstop rumbling, pealing, and cracking from all directions.
