AS A COLLEGE teacher I am often surprised at my students incuriosity about their annual calendar and its trimester division. If they think about it, most will figure out that the great Christian festivals of Christmas and Easter account for two of the breaks (or "vacations") in their academic year. Given that the earliest universities were monastic institutions, these holidays - literally holy days - are an apostolic link with academe's origins, as is the religious gown that graduates wear at commencement and their formal embrace of lifelong celibacy with the award of their "bachelor" degree. ...
