Dr. Richard J. Cleveland of Wellesley, former chief surgeon at Tufts-New England Medical Center and chairman of the department of surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine, died Tuesday at Tufts-New England Medical Center after a long battle with a brain tumor. He was 70.
Born in Taunton, he was raised in Foxboro. He was a longtime resident of Wellesley. Dr. Cleveland received his bachelor's degree from Tufts University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, where he was a member of the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha.
