The Middle East, June 1st, 1995

The Battle of Karbala, in which the prophet Mohammed's grandson Hussain bin Ali was defeated by Yazid bin Muuawiya, is replayed every year in communities across Iran. The battle, which gave birth to Shiism, is performed by handsomely paid roving theaters in various playlets called the Tazyeh. Many believe that wishes made on the day of the battle's performance will be granted.

This month in villages, towns and cities all over Iran companies of actors, working in specially adapted theatres known as Tekyeh, will be replaying events which took place over 1,300 years ago in the month of Muharram....
