A few years after I became a journalist, I met Bebe Moore Campbell. I have wracked my brain to come up with the exact year. I believe it was 1981. Now that she is gone, it doesn't seem to matter.
It was way before she was the bestselling author whose books included Your Blues Ain 't Like Mine, Brothers and Sisters and 72 Hour Hold. I was at a meeting of the Washington Association of Black Journalists, and I spotted this woman in a stylish big apple cap. Something about her intrigued me. Maybe it was the way she had that cap cocked confidently to one side. Maybe she asked a question.
