Waldemar Freyre is one of many heroic officers who worked to save lives in the aftermath of September 11.

On Saturday, he arrived in Lancaster to honor and surprise his own hero, his Fresh Air mother, Esther Mae Heistand.

At Freyre's request, Fresh Air Fund Lancaster coordinator Barbara Horst and Heistand's daughter Kathy Brainerd gathered Heistand's family and Fresh Air hosts to celebrate her 86th birthday and listen to her stories.
