Three days after receiving the first fully implanted artificial heart, a middle-aged man lying in a Louisville hospital bed was placed back on a breathing tube to help him rest and regain strength, officials said yesterday. The respirator was reinserted late Wednesday, a few hours after the patient had shed the device, sat up in bed and spoken with his doctors and his family for the first time since his diseased heart was removed July 2 and replaced by a yo-yo-shaped, titanium-and- plastic pump about as wide as a small grapefruit.
