President Nixon had his tapes. Sen. Packwood has his diaries. And somehow it seems that the privacy of diaries elicits more support. None of our respondents defended Packwood against the complaints of sexual harassment that have been raised . But of 235 callers, 160 said his diaries deserve some protection on privacy grounds. A diary, several said, is an extension of a person's mind, of private thoughts, and should be given special treatment. Another 75 callers disagreed.
