The Massachusetts Republican who has perhaps gone the furthest in modern times with conservative backing announced last week that-even without the blessings of GOP Gov. Jane Swift-he would seek their party's nomination for lieutenant governor at the summer convention. Boston developer Jim Rappaport, who drew a handsome (for Massachusetts) 43% of the vote against Democratic Sen. John Kerry in 1990 and later went on to rescue the Bay State GOP from penury as state party chairman, told us he would run in spite of Swift's not-too-hidden efforts to recruit someone else as her running mate.
