The plot is common in popular Indian cinema. The orphan Raja (Aamir Khan), a taxi-driver from the provinces, falls in love with Aarti (Karisma Kapoor), a well-to-do young woman from Mumbai. She soon reciprocates, but her father resists the marriage because of the lovers' class differences. He eventually changes his mind, but the real wrinkle this time around is that Shalu, Aarti's Cruella de Ville-like stepmother, has her own agenda, and joined by her brother and her nephew, Shalu tries to disrupt the marriage.
