The intermodal industry, whose success has transformed shipping this decade, hit a plateau at the end of 2006 in terms of volume handled, according to the earnings statements of the four largest U.S. railroads. While there was some variation among the intermodal results of Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern, the pattern was for no volume growth from the final quarters of 2005 to 2006, but some overall annual increase from international trade, rather than domestic moves.
