R & L Carriers built a new headquarters and other facilities to service its large fleet in 1996. The truck maintenance shop has 19 drive-thru bays or 38 half-bays. It was the hope of Jerry Johns, Maintenance director for R & L, that he could find a way to expel the diesel exhaust outside the facility to keep the black soot off the walls and ceiling. According to Jerry, "This would create a healthier work environment, provide better interior lighting for the mechanics and require less cleaning and painting. Also, in the winter, if you have to open the doors it lets all your heat out."
