Total research and development expenditures in the United States are expected to increase by about 2.5% from the $283.8 billion spent in 2003 to nearly $291 billion in 2004, according to the Battelle/R & D Magazine annual funding forecast.
Government funding of scientific R & D will increase the most, while industrial support will rise only slightly in 2004. Based on data supplied by the National Science Foundation, the forecast predicts the following:
