Parris N. Glendening was born in the Bronx in 1942 and grew up in South Florida. He received a doctorate in political science from Florida State University in 1967 and began teaching at the University of Maryland at College Park. Glendening, 56, is married to Frances Anne Glendening. They have a college-age son, Raymond. Glendening, a Democrat, was elected to the Hyattsville City Council in 1973 and then was elected to two terms on the Prince George's County Council and three terms as county executive.
