InTech, May 1st, 2007

Fourier series is a mathematical tool widely applied in control systems and instrumentation. Some uses of Fourier series include electrical engineering, vibration analysis, acoustics, optics, signal and image processing, and data compression. Spectrum and power analyzers, systems identification, and filter design are based on this technique. A Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, for instance, could detect chemical agents at considerable distances, monitoring atmospheric pollution emissions at plastics, petroleum, chemical, and pharmaceutical plants.
