Pennsylvania's long reliance on coal-fired power plants has been both good and bad for the state. Good, because coal is plentiful. It creates jobs and helps keep energy costs in check. Bad, because burned coal emits mercury. Because Pennsylvania has 36 coal-fired power plants, it ranks second only to Texas in the amount of mercury released into the atmosphere annually.
