Born: 17 January 1962, Belmont, Massachusetts.
Family: Father, Miguel, physicist specialising in subaquatic acoustics; mother, Ellen Junger, artist. One younger sister, Carlotta, art director with a travel-guide publishers in London.
Education: Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Wesleyan University, Connecticut. Graduated in 1984 with BA in cultural anthropology.
Books: The Perfect Storm, first published by WW Norton in May 1997. More than 2.5 million copies sold worldwide.
Film: The Perfect Storm, which made $62.7m on its opening weekend this June in the US.
