Life Story

Born: 15 August 1856, Legbrannock, Holytown, Lanarkshire. (Died: 26 September 1915).

Family: Mother: Mary Keir, a farm servant; father: David, a ship's carpenter; brothers include David, briefly a Labour MP (d 1935), and George, also a Labour MP (d 1939).

Marriage: To Lillie (nee Wilson), a collier's daughter in 1882. Two sons, Duncan (died in an industrial accident) and James, a gambler; and a daughter Agnes, or "Nan", who married Emrys Hughes, biographer of Hardie, a left- Labour MP, and brother of Agnes Hughes, a close friend of Hardie.
