Although the first postage stamp of the Dominion featured an industrious beaver courtesy of Sir Sandford Fleming, the vast majority of early Canadian postage stamps featured portraits of the reigning monarch and the royal family. Much of the design work was relegated to the printers and engravers responsible for producing these items. The results were fairly standardized and, in many ways, resembled Greek and Roman coins of antiquity.
