Poetic discourse patterning in Ramon Menendez Pidal's Cantar de Mio Cid is examined.

It is generally assumed that the unit of the poetic discourse in the Cid is the laisse, which has even been used as a principle of emendation. However, this is only a conjecture based on a more than doubtful analogy with Old French epic versification. A more adequate concept is proposed, deictic dissonance, which reveals that the author resorted to techniques that have escaped the attention of modern critics.
