West Indian poet Derek Walcott won the Nobel Prize for Literature yesterday, becoming the first Caribbean writer to receive the honor. The prize, worth $1.2 million this year, came four days before the 500th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Indies. Yesterday afternoon, Walcott flew as scheduled from his home in Boston to Charlottesville to participate in a conference on the explorer's legacy.
