The University of Nebraska Press has recently published M[ary] E[lizabeth] Grenander's Poems of Ambrose Bierce. Because Bierce's reputation rests on his Civil War and gothic short stories, Grenander's generic focus is surprising. After all, Bierce had no doubts about his own poetic abilities: his short "Humility" reads, "Great poets fire the world with fagots big / That make a crackling racket, / But I'm content with but a whispering twig / To warm some single jacket" (3). ...
