Monarch Notes 01-01-1963 Oedipus The King (430? B.C.) Background: There is dispute about the exact date of this play. The dating argument hinges on possible relationships between the plague described in the play and an actual plague in Athens in 430-427 B.C. It is not known what other tragedies were presented in the same contest, but an ancient commentator says that Oedipus was awarded second place. If so, the prize was no indication of the play's merits, for Aristotle, in his Poetics, praises it very highly, and subsequent generations have taken it as the perfect model of Greek tragedy.
