Irish hearts have always managed to reserve some space for the Australian bush outlaw Ned Kelly who lived fast and died young (or so the story goes. Kelly, born of Irish stock, certainly died young. It seems too easy to forget that he was only 25 when he was hanged in 1880, apparently sighing farewell to existence with an impressively world-weary "such is life." Also forgotten is the fact that his colorful, somewhat surreal career of crime as a fully-fledged and ultimately ironclad outlaw lasted little more than two years. His story plays no small part in explaining the colonial experience. ...
