The Peacekeeping Operation (PKO), a successor to the Interfet operation, has around 8,000 troops in East Timor. The exigent security work is done by those forces that secure the 150-mile border, mainly Australian and New Zealand, supported in 2001 by the Singaporean contingent. A clear "national division of labour" emerged in East Timor under both Interfet and the PKO --- as it does in all PKOs --- which sees the aforementioned national contributions undertaking the difficult roles, and being exposed to casualties, while other nations prefer the safety of the hinterland.
