Francine Weinbaum was among the earliest academic critics of Paul Scott. As a graduate student writing a dissertation on his work, she invited him to lecture at the University of Illinois in 1975, where he met her thesis advisor, Bernard Benstock, who in turn provided the recommendation that led to Scott's spending two semesters as a Writer-in-Residence at the University of Tulsa. She conducted a correspondence with Scott until his death in 1978, and by 1984 had published three articles on The Raj Quartet.
