This little-known play, written in 1877 by Henrik Ibsen, is not only a detailed indictment of corruption in its own times, but also of the systematic practice of sleaze, spin and moral panhandling in our own times.
It is summed up in the story of Bernick, a morally-upright shipbuilder and pillar of the community in smalltown Norway who puts his fortune, family and good name on the line to cover up past misdeeds.
