SMACKING a child is often the result of parental exasperation, and is best avoided as a means of punishing bad behaviour. But in this fallen world, children can be wilfully naughty, and even the best parents will sometimes resort to smacking where remonstrances fail. The Government was right, accordingly, to warn its peers against the outright criminalisation of parents who slap their children in last night's vote in the Lords.
