Pare Lorentz, 86, a director and producer of highly acclaimed documentary films aimed at explaining issues of the New Deal to the American public, died March 4 at his home in Armonk, N.Y. He had cancer. Mr. Lorentz made his first film, "The Plow That Broke the Plains," a poetic and compelling documentary about agricultural and social problems related to the Dust Bowl, for the U.S. Resettlement Agency in 1936.
