The rapidly developing interest in antitumour compounds such as taxol and the more recently announced cytoxic compounds such as the epothilones and discodermolide (for the latest synthesis, see J. Org. Chem., 1997, 62, 6098) has shown that it is likely that a wider range of compounds with microtubulestabilising properties will be isolated. Eleutherobin (1), which bears structural similarities to the eunicellin and cladiellane terpenoids, is the latest molecule to be added to this list (J. Am. Chem.
