Raymond Gubbay is not mounting a new arena production this year or, indeed, next year, but has revived David Freeman's 2002 spectacular and gaudy production of Carmen, which opened at the Royal Albert Hall last Thursday.
Of all the Gubbay operas-in-the-round, Carmen makes best use of the vast space. The S-shaped ramp ensures that just about everyone gets an eyeful of the well-drilled, fantastically detailed crowd scenes, and it adapts well to accommodating the cigarette factory, the smugglers' mountain hide-away and the Seville bull-ring.
