Texas banker Don Powell takes over the reins at FDIC
On August 29, 2001, Amarillo banker Donald E. Powell was sworn in as the 18th Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. - just 15 years after his bank topped a list of the 50 banks most likely to fail.
Operating a bank in the turbulent 1980s and eventually turning it around gave Powell valuable experience and almost legendary status in the Texas Panhandle.
