A state Supreme Court justice who filled one of two seats based in Oswego County steps off the bench today and hands his robe over to a longtime Mexico lawyer.

Justice Robert J. Nicholson, 65, of Oswego, retired after 14 years on the bench. He was replaced by Norman W. Seiter Jr., 57, of Mexico.

"I thought it was time to retire and let one of the younger guys take over and enjoy the position," Nicholson said Monday. "I think there comes a time in life when it's appropriate to have someone else have a chance."
