Of herons, happy kids and hard feelings

I spent the summer chasing herons and grandchildren.

As I grow older, there are times that I want to crawl into a closet and contemplate life in the dark behind a suit coat. But herons and grandchildren have kept me out of our closets this summer, except for my daily trip for underwear and socks.

Nearly every morning, I go out on the small lake where we have our home. Sometimes older people are forgetful, but I never forget the boat.

We all need somewhere to hide on occasion, and this is the hiding...
