A FORMER Mr America, Mr World and Mr Universe, the muscleman and actor Steve Reeves found film fame playing the mythical strongman Hercules. In the early Sixties he was the world's most popular male star.
The sensational success of the Italian-made Le Fatiche di Ercole, shrewdly marketed as Hercules in 1959 by the producer Joe Levine, led to a string of "sword and sandal" epics starring the 6ft 1in Reeves which, though mainly derided by critics, attracted large audiences and made Reeves a generation's role model.
