THE LAST surviving member of the Hollywood Ten, that group of film writers who, in 1947, refused to tell the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) whether or not they were Communists, Ring Lardner Jnr was the wittiest of the group, and, despite years on the blacklist, refreshingly sanguine about the experience. He won Academy Awards for two screenplays, one before and one after his blacklisting.
