I first met Mordecai Richler in 1969 when Cocksure, his wonderful comic novel about London in the Sixties, was published in paperback, writes Carmen Callil.

I had never met a funny Canadian before, and Mordecai, seriously funny on the page, was even better in real life. He was round and crumpled, genial and witty.
