FROM MARCH 1960 to the end of October 1989 Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler attacked West Germany and "Western imperialism" with his weekly broadcast on East German television.
His programme, Der Schwarze Kanal ("The Black Channel"), lasted 20 minutes and employed the formula, developed by the Nazi propaganda chief, Dr Josef Goebbels, of using enemy footage with his own commentary, to damn the evil society to the west of the Berlin Wall.
