JOYCE GODBER was the first county archivist of Bedfordshire (1946- 68), having been acting clerk of the records since 1942. Her History of Bedfordshire was originally published by the county council in 1969 and is still in print today. Covering in detail eight centuries, from the Norman Conquest to the foundation of county councils in 1888, it is a magisterial work, splendidly illustrated and firmly based on archive sources (much of which she had catalogued herself).
