WITHOUT FEAR or favour, MGM's publicity department called Hedy Lamarr "the most beautiful woman in the world". Cinemagoers might have argued who was second - Vivien Leigh or Ingrid Bergman or Rita Hayworth - but they did not dispute MGM's claim. Lamarr had flawless features, a long black mane and eyes which suggested that she was not really of this world - neither diabolic nor angelic, but, because of her luscious appearance, dangerous rather than saintly.
