WITH THE abolition of the death penalty for murder and the end of the fashionable defended divorce, members of the Bar tended to lose some of their shine in the public eye. One glowing exception was George Carman who, for some 30 years, provided regular entertainment with his wit, the nastiness of his cross-examination and his seeming ability to produce last-minute evidence which undermined his opponent's case.
