ASTRID LINDGREN was Sweden's best-known contemporary writer and a key figure in the transformation of 20th-century children's literature. Having won second prize in a 1944 book competition whose stated aim was to promote "love of the home and of the family, as well as sobriety and responsibility in relation to the opposite sex", Lindgren went on the next year, almost as if in reaction, to create her famously contradictory heroine Pippi Longstocking.
