Ludwig Karl Ratschiller, a man with many friends and an excellent geologist, died March 27, 2004, after a courageous struggle with cancer. He was born in 1921 in Brixen, Italy, the son of a Tyrolese father and a Polish mother. As a native Tyrolean, Ratschiller came into contact with the spectacular outcrops of Alpine rock formations. He was inspired to study geology and began his studies in Austria in January 1941. After World War II, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Innsbruck, Austria.
