The transformation of Dmitry Gurov from lecher to caring lover in Anton Chekhov's 'The Lady with the Pet Dog' is reflected in a scene from the middle of the story that had previously been ignored by the critics. Gurov takes offense at a friend's free-association of women with spoiled fish. He himself had made a similar comparison earlier in the story. His change of attitude is reflected in Chekov's mention that Gurov's feelings are hurt by the association of the woman he loves with dead fish.
