This moody little novel about the last 50 years of Central European history is flawed from the very start. It's either arrogance or laziness that leads Jill Paton Walsh to set this tale of Communism and its aftermath in a fake place.
The title refers to a line from Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale" often used to demonstrate Western Europe's ignorance of the region.
