A SECOND genetic code it is not. But a discovery announced last week does begin to clear up the biggest remaining mystery in the code of life. In all living things, the information encoded in genes has to be translated from the language of DNA-the chemical of which genes are made-into the language of proteins. This takes several steps, one of which involves another cipher of some kind. The location, though not the key, of that cipher has now been discovered.
