It is important, on the one hand, to establish what contribution a new work has made to the understanding of its subject in all languages. But, on the other hand, I must also put myself in the shoes of a different kind of reader: how interesting will this book be for him or her? It is no secret that some who publish `new' research about Russia in other countries are, in fact, merely exploiting their knowledge of the language and of work already available in Russia itself.
