Louis Le Pensec has been named as the new French minister for agriculture and fisheries by Lionel Jospin, Socialist Prime Minister in the new French government. Le Pensec, 60, was minister of the marine in the Socialist administration from 1981-83 and overseas territories minister from 1988-1993. Born of a working-class family of eight children, Le Pensec has been mayor of the village of Mellac, Brittany since 1971. He is regarded as a skilled negotiator, having concluded an accord with separatists in New Caledonia when he was minister for overseas territories in 1988.
